Cynthia is awesome … …

Dr Cynthia Brown is an Academic Consultant specialising in intimate partner violence. Collaborating across multiple institutions including Monash University, Deakin University and the University of Melbourne, she completed her PhD in 2021 investigating technology‑facilitated abuse, with a particular focus on measurement and the impacts of digital harm among young people.

Cynthia developed a new and innovative measure of technology‑facilitated abuse in relationships (the TAR Scale), which has been rated among the top three global measures of technology‑facilitated abuse, gained national visibility through its inclusion in annual Australian youth surveys, and attracted international interest through translation into at least eight languages across Europe, Asia and Africa.

With her collaborators, Cynthia has authored 13 peer‑reviewed publications, including work on the gendered and patterned nature of technology‑facilitated abuse and its impacts, as well as research developing rigorous new measures of intimate partner sexual violence, psychological abuse in relationships, and coercive control. To date, her publications have been cited more than 650 times.

Independent of her academic work, Cynthia is the Chair of the Kyamba Foundation, a philanthropic organisation that fosters leadership, wellbeing, creativity, and environmental stewardship across North‑Eastern Victoria.
